İncil Yazarı Aziz Yahya Church (Ioannes Theologos)

The Church of Saint John the Evangelist (Ioannes Theologos) is a structure carved into a conical rock to the southeast of the rock mass containing the Monastery of Saint Nicholas. On the tympanum of the entrance door on the southern side of the church, the inscription “Ioannes Theologos parekklesion” appears in the Greek alphabet, with an incised cross beneath the inscription. No dating information is preserved in the building. The naos, the main worship space, has a near-square free-cross plan and is covered by a dome on pendentives. The round apse to the east is separated from the naos by two simple templon slabs. The interior is plain, with no decorative elements.
