Located at the far end of the valley, the Church of Saint Barbara is mentioned in texts written during the Greek (Rum) period as a place of pilgrimage where visitors believed that spells cast upon them would be broken and their children would be protected from illnesses, particularly scarlet fever and measles. As the feast days of Saint Nicholas, Saint Barbara and Saint Savvas fall on consecutive dates, special celebrations were held at the Monastery of Saint Nicholas between 3 and 8 December. The priests of the parish churches, together with both Greeks and Turks, attended the church services.
